Purchase of lands at Mungret

Update as at January 1st, 2021.

As many of you are aware, we entered into an agreement with Limerick City and County Council to purchase a 5.87 acre site at Mungret, beside Mungret College. There has been a lot of delays on the completion of the purchase – issues such as the building of the road to access the land etc.

A group of Dooneen AC members visited the site on the 29th of December. We have begun to make plans to have the purchase completed as soon as possible. We are also planning to publish drawings of possible development on the site in the coming months. We would welcome any input that members might have.

Update on purchase of Land from Limerick City and County Council – January 2019

In late 2017, Dooneen AC entered into an agreement with Limerick City and County Council to purchase a plot of land approximately 6 acres in size.  The piece of land is based close to Mungret GAA grounds at the back of the new Mungret Community College. The cost of purchasing the site is €70,000. To facilitate the purchase of the lands in late 2017, we reached out to members and parents to help raise the final amount of €20,000 needed to complete the purchase. In addition, we have been fundraising since then with additional weekly contributions at juvenile sessions and the senior section of our club has organised annual events such as the Michael Rejmer series.

Contracts were prepared and we engaged a solicitor to act on our behalf at the start of 2018. However, the process has not moved since then. We have begun actively working to try and find out the reason why the Council has not allowed us to finalise the purchase of the site. A number of committee members from Dooneen AC met with a Council Official last week and various members also spoke to local councillors about the delay. We have been informed that the main delay in moving ahead with finalising the sale relates to the lack of access at present to the site. There is a plan to build and construct a road around the edge of the site – the planning application for this road will be lodged by March, with construction expected to start by the end of the year and expected completion by end of 2020.

In the meantime, we wish to try and move the development forward. We will be holding a public meeting for all members/parents in the next few weeks and we intend to invite local councillors and representatives to the meeting to seek their views on how they can help this process move forward. We are also going to look for feedback on what you as members/parents would like to see developed once the land is purchased. We hope to draw up some plans from that feedback and possibly begin making a planning application.

Thank you for your continued support. If you can help in moving this process forward, please contact us on fundraising@dooneenathleticclub.com or ring Phil Roche on 085 -1429237
