Munster U9-U11 pairs

Posted on Jul 13, 2021

Glorious sunshine, tears, falls, smiles and laughter marked the return of the Munster Pairs, with a total of eighteen athletes from Dooneen AC making the trip to CIT to take on the best in Munster.
First out on the track were the u9 pair of Katelyn Sweeney and Lucy O’ Donnell. Both girls had returned home early from holidays to represent Dooneen and performed admirably in the 60m before producing a huge performance in the 300m to claim 3rd place and bronze medals.
Andrew Birmingham and Somto Amadi represented the u9 boys and were equal to the task. Superb performances by both these boys in the 300m and 60m were enough to bag silver medals in the 60m and a ticket to the National Championships in August.
U10 girls: Eva McMahon, Faye Cusack, Robyn Clarke and Belle Crowley lined up in a very high quality 60m and none of these girls looked out of place, with very good performances from all four. Robyn and Belle also had some fine leaps in the long jump, while Faye and Eva paired up for the 500m event and showed great battling qualities to the end. A special mention to Faye who got knocked over in her race but bounced backed up to get going again.

U10 boys: Iarla Kelleher and Oisin Purtill lined up for the 60m and turbo javelin. Solid performances from both boys in the 60m were followed by big throws in the turbo javelin, and with that, the gold medals were making their way to Dooneen with Munster champions Iarla and Oisin.
U11 girls: Ciara Lynn and Eilbhe Cuneen toed the line in the u11 600m. Ciara, running in her first Munster Championship had a very good run while Eilbhe also gave a very good account of herself. Eilbhe then paired with Gyte Andrijauskaite for the turbo javelin. These two accomplished throwers were right in the mix and took home silver medals after some great throws. A special mention to Kate Cantwell who could not compete at these championships due to appendicitis, Get well soon Kate.
U11 boys: Cian O’ Donnell, Ben Birmingham, Jake Barclay, Odhran O’ Keefe and Robert Purtill were in action at various disciplines in the boys u11 category. The Garryowen rugby boys of Cian and Ben paired up for the sprint and long jump and displayed great athleticism in both events. Odhran and Jake were also in action in the sprint and again had very good performances.
Odhran then paired with Robert for 600m and were tantalisingly close to the medals in fourth place. The pairing of Jake and Robert were in action in the turbo javelin, the final event of the day. The boys had two great throws of the javelin which were enough to secure silver medals.
Overall a great day for Dooneen AC and a bright future beckons for these young athletes. Thank you to Munster Athletics for organising this event under challenging circumstances and a big thank you to all the Dooneen coaches who played a massive part in preparing these young athletes for competition
