Big Dooneen turnout for County Indoor Finals in Nenagh.

The Limerick County Indoor Finals were held in the Nenagh Olympic track on Saturday last, the first of the indoor meets of the winter season. There was a great turnout from all Limerick clubs with Dooneen having 83 athletes in action, many of whom did extremely well on their first time in competition.

Some Dooneen rising stars in action in Nengah on Saturday evenning last.

There were many fine club performances on the day, with the hurdlers opening proceedings in fine style, clearly showing the benefits of top class coaching. Lily Ann O’Hora one of Dooneen’s rising young stars showed again why she is so promising by winning a good triple in the 60m hurdles, the 60m sprint and then the 200m. High jumper Emmanuel Sabayo who competed on the Dooneen Junior men’s team in Belgium in September, had a fine day also in the 60m sprint but also helped the junior relay team which included David Carroll, Cathal Bennis and Shane Burke to get up for a fine victory.

Counihan joins National Jumps Squad.
Dooneen’s Niall Counihan has been selected to join the national jumps squad. Michael McDonnell has invited Niall to join the squad as a specialist triple jumper and he will now train regularly with some of Ireland’s other leading jumpers under the guidance of some top UK and international jumps coaches. This is a good boost for Niall, who has overcome recent injuries. Niall is a qualified physical trainer who formerly attended St. Enda’s College where he was introduced to athletics by Phil Roche. He has competed for Ireland on a number of occasions and last year was a key member of the UL Inter varsities team. He has also worked with Stephen Howard one of the club’s other triple jump specialists who has made good progress in his first season at this event. Well done to Niall.

Dooneen Double by Ryan and O’Connor in Tralee.
With several athletes ill and 'as lathair' it was a small band of Dooneen athletes who braved the mud and muck of Tralee race course, on a wet and windy afternoon for the Munster uneven ages XC finals, and once again they enjoyed good success.

As in Dungarvan a few weeks ago, pride of place once again goes to the gritty Shannen Ryan. Shannen led from gun to tape again to win the u17 race from Kate Veale of West Waterford and thus completed an impressive u17 and u18 Munster double for the first time in her career.

Surprise of the day was the return to form of Cathal O’Connor, who improved significantly on his Dungarvan run last day out. Today he was part of a five man group who cruised around the 5k course, before they split on the final lap. Initially the spilt saw three athletes make the break, but coming up the final hill on firmer ground, Cathal took over and kicked strongly for the line. He finished ahead of Togher's Peter Hanrahan, Liam Markham in third, Dara Chesser in fourth spot and West Limerick’s Michael Yelverton in fifth. Shane Lynch also ran well on his first day out this year and finished in the pack.

The highly impressive Jessica Coyne made further progress finishing in third spot from a large field of runners and displayed great physical and mental toughness that has marked her out as one to watch for the future. In the same race Juliana Gleeson did well in the tough conditions finishing in the pack.

In the u13 girls another athlete to watch for in the future, Dooneen’s Brigitta Murphy finished in 6th spot and now qualifies for the All Ireland finals in Coleraine in Co. Derry in early December. First athlete into action on the day was Susan O'Neill in the girls u11 who ran very well and was one of the leading Limerick runners in that race. Well done to all.

The next XC event will be the All Ireland even age finals in Kilbeggan, Co Westmeath on November 22nd . This event will also be the final trials for the Irish teams to compete in the European Cross Country Championships in Santry on December 12th.
