Recent Dooneen AC export to Grand Canyon University, Phoenix, Arizona, USA, the girl from Kilmallock, Fiona Moloney got her US college career off to a great start with her first inter collegiate goal this weekend at home in a 4-0 thrashing of New Mexico Highland University.
Fiona who has settled in well is enjoying life in the sunny south western State, as she is proving to be a very popular recruit for GCU. Nicknamed the 'Lopes' the team has made a great start to the season playing three, winning two and losing one. Now with Fiona in top form that will all change and it will be wins all the way no doubt.
Over the next few weeks Fiona will have an intensive series of games including games against Hawaii University. Playing soccer at #9 Fiona, is Majoring in Marketing and Advertising and will put Kilmallock on the map when she returns home no doubt.
GCU has taken a strategic decision to raise the profile of the College by boosting their overall sports programme in 2010/2011. Inspired by Fiona's success with Dooneen and Ireland, for the first time this year GCU has put together a ladies Track and Field team, building on a mix of new recruits from Jamaica and their existing cross country team. No doubt the 'Lopes T&F' will be a force to be reckoned with.
Meanwhile all young throwers note coach Gary Moloney is interested in coaching any interested young throwers.
