Dooneen athletes performed well at the annual 'Mary from Murroe Festival 5k' yesterday. The race attracted a fine entry of nearly 200 runners and walkers and the scenic course meandered through the beautiful grounds of Glenstall Abbey finishing at the front entrance gate.
First Dooneen athlete home was Cathal O'Connor in just under 16mins behind winner Michael Yeleverton of Limerick Tri Club who was recently crowned European Junior Triathlon champion with the seasoned campaigner Dermont kearns of West Limerick AC who won the Dooneen 5k a few weeks ago, in second place. Shane Lynch who has been a regular 5k runner this season was again well up with the pack and had a fine race finishing in sixth place and third in the junior category which he won last year.
Fresh from his marathon efforts in the national Community Games finals in Athlone last week was young William O'Dwyer from Adare, who is showing great promise and improving with every outing. With a cross country season behind him he will be one to watch for the future. The Sheehan sisters Ailish ( doing very well at the rowing this season and looking at a possible move to the USA next year) and Aine also participated. Kevin O'Connor did very well in his category with Liam O'Hora failing to show.
Well done also to Tony Breen, PE teacher in Glenstall ( a very handy scrum half in his day with Bruff RFC) for organising the event with our own John Sheehan there to assist and help out with the pre-race workout for those that arrived early enough. The refreshments afterwards provided by the local community were very welcome.
