Dooneen's sprint sensation Greg O'Shea rounded off a very impressive season by winning gold at the Celtic Games in Athlone Institute of Technology this afternoon, where there was a good sprinkling of Dooneen supporters there to support him. Competing against the best u16 200m sprinters from Scotland, Wales and Ulster, Greg had a clear win in an impresssive time of 22.62 just outside the competition record.
Greg a student at Crescent college is having a great season on the track having already represented the Irish schools athletics team with distinction in Scotland in July, not to mention his rugby exploits where he led Crescent to victory in the Munster Schools Junior Cup for the first time in many years. Greg has a strong athletic pedigree, his mother Carol was a former Dooneen athlete of a few years ago and father Niall a member of the great Shannon RFC teams of the 1990s and himself a successful schoolboy athlete over 400m.
Greg was also due to compete in the relay later in the afternoon but sprained his ankle on a track side hazard - as did a few athletes on the day. This is something that will be a concern for the organisers. Jane Dickenson was also due to compete but was unfortunately overseas for this event. Sarah Lavin 200m and Amy O'Donoghue 1500m also struck gold on what was another good day for Limerick athletics.
Well done to Greg and all the O'Shea family. |
