It will be a busy weekend for Dooneen athletes this weekend with the Tailteann Games schools interprovincial on Saturday and the Woodies AAI Junior and u23 finals on Sunday.
Dooneen athletes have performed very well in recent years in the Tailteann Games, one of the great juvenile events on the Irish athletic calender, which is usually held at the Morton Stadium, in Santry. This year's athletes, all from Crescent College include highly rated sprinter and rugby hero Greg O'Shea, Celtic Games international hurdler Lily Ann O'Hora and #4 ranked national high jumper Aishling Croke, who has broken successive indoor and outdoor competition records over the last few months. Selection on the Irish schools team is an added incentive for those competing in this event. Missing this event unfortunately will be the impressive sprinter Laura Nevin who will be in the USA and who has been having a really great season.
On Sunday then the action will turn to the Junior's and the u23s. The Leaving Cert has decimated the regular Dooneen team in the junior events who will be without Cathal O'Connor, Kevin Lynch, Shane Lynch and Ronan Quaelly, but a good representation is expected, which will include Canada bound world junior 400m hurdler Timmy Crowe, triple jumper Stepjhen Howard, long jumper Nathan Jege, javelin Anton Katayev, and 100m hurdler and high jumper Emmanuel Sabayeo.
New additons to the juinor mens squad this year will include Cathal Bennis, Shane Burke and the highly impressive new recruit from the town of Hospital, 200m specialist Sean Barrett. Jane Dickinson who showed good form in Cork last weekend will be in action in the 100m, while Fiona Moloney fresh from her exertions in Budapest with the Irish National senior team in the European Team Finals will be competing.
The u23 squad will include internationals, sprinters David O'Shea, Cian Aherne, Simon Hogan and triple jumper Niall Counihan.
Best of luck to all.
