Two of the clubs leading athletes Timmy Crowe 400m hurdles and Fiona Moloney shot putt were in action in Bedford UK and Budapest Hungary over the weekend. World Junior Championship qualifier Timmy Crowe who will travel to Moncton, Canada next month returned to Bedford, a track where he first raced for the Irish schools, to compete in the highly competitive AAAs over the weekend.
On Saturday he was a comfortable second in his heat to the UKs excellent Niall Flannery. Going into the final yesterday he was quietly confident with the third fastest heat time. At the 300m mark he was lying in third place and looking good, but hit the 7th hurdle a rattle, which stopped his momentum and moved him out of contention. With two or three more races to go before he departs for Canada, this was a very useful workout for Timmy.
Further east in Budapest, Hungary, Fiona Moloney, Doonen's top Shot putter, was competing for the Irish women's senior team who finished a very creditable 7th in Division 1 of the European Cup team competition. Having just spent the last few weeks preparaing and completing her Leaving Cert exams, Fiona was below her best, but with exams behind her now she will now focus on the various domestic competitions.
Well done to both Fiona and Timmy.
