Dooneen athletes feature strongly at Munster Schools XC Finals in Cork. Print E-mail

There were some great results today at the Munster Schools XC Finals in CIT Cork for Dooneen and other Limerick athletes, in what was a dress rehearsal for the All Schools XC finals on the 13th March next. Since our last visit there has been a huge investment in facilities with a very impressive new stand, which will make it ‘the’ place to compete in track this year.

In the first race of the day the minor girls, Dooneen had three athletes running and first home in fourth place was Sarah Lannigan, of Colaiste na Trocaire, fresh from her great performance in Roscommon last weekend. Next home was Brigitta Murphy in tenth place, but she did take gold as part of the Ursuline Convent team from Thurles. Julianna Gleeson running for Villiers also did well, and finished well up in the pack as did Kate Fitzgearld of Limerick AC.

Dylan Sheehan of Crescent  in the lead as he hits the finals straight in the Minor Boys final.

Jessica Coyne crosses the river as she enters the final section of the Junior girls final.
In the minor boys there was only one Dooneen athlete, and that was Dylan Sheehan, but when you have Dylan you only need one, as he led from start to finish and romped home in first place for Crescent College.

In the Junior girls, again there was only one Dooneen athlete, Jessica Coyne, who was sixth in Roscommon in the rerun of the AAI XC u15 finals. Today she was up against the barefoot Clancy twins from Kilmihill. This was a very intense race and Jessica had to battle all the way and with 300m to go, it was neck and neck as Jessica proved her battling qualities and dug extremely deep to take second virtually on the line. The Junior boys saw a great performance from Kyle Larkin of Emerald AC, running for Ard Scoil Ris CBS, who was an impressive second.

The intermediate girls saw another Limerick win for Amy O’Donoghue who was never threatened and she won comfortably from Kate Veale of West Waterford. In the senior girls Dooneen’s, Shannen Ryan ran very well and finished in second place.

In the final race of the day the senior boys Dooneen had four athletes involved. The race was won on the day by the highly impressive Shane Quinn from Waterford, who is clearly back to his best after being out with injury. Cathal O’Connor was in fourth place, with Shane Lynch 19th, Gavin Ryan 27th and Cathal Bennis, better known as a sprinter filling a team spot for Croom further back.

Well done to all.
