While some of Dooneen's seasoned athletes were in the relative comfort of Celtic Cup indoor action in Cardiiff at the weekend, two of the next generation were battling it out in frosty far off Roscommon, competing in the national inter county cross country relay finals. Here there was a big win for the Limerick u14 girls team, who beat the best in Ireland to take gold, on a scenic course on the shores of Lough Key Forest Park, near Boyle.
In a joint venture with Emerald Ac, the team included two of Dooneen’s brightest prospects Sarah Lanigan and Brigitta Murphy - safely recovered from her equestrian accident, that kept her out of the Munster finals in Carraig na BhFear. Emerald athletes included the impressive Niamh Brennan and Jenna Bromell. In the end the girls had a convincing win, finishing almost 80m ahead of the team from Donegal.
This victory is significant as this was one of the few Limerick teams to emerge from the Munster finals in Cork. To go all the way and take the national title should provide a timely boost for juvenile cross country running in Limerick.
Also in action on the day was Jessica Coyne in the re-run of the U 15 A All Ireland 1500m CC Final from Coleraine, Jessica improved her position and took home the 6th place medal as well as the Gold Team Munster Medal.
Well done to all involved most of whom will be in action again next Friday at the Munster schools cross country finals in CIT, Cork.
