Gold, Silver and Bronze for Dooneen at National Indoors in Odyssey Belfast. Print E-mail
With seven athletes competing in the Odyssey arena in Belfast, Dooneen had a weekend to remember up north. Pride of place goes to Fiona Moloney, who won the ladies shot with a throw of 11.90m, below her previous best, but still good enough to see off all challengers to become national indoor champion of Ireland.

For Timmy Crowe it was another weekend of new milestones. Having secured a new PB in the  London Games last weekend, he followed that up with a new PB on Saturday in the heats in 49.55 and thus qualify for the A final, ahead of some of Ireland’s elite 400m athletes. In the final then on Sunday, he went further in a magnificent run to take second place in 48.84 behind Nick Hogan - his third new PB in a week. Timmy is now looking very good for up and coming junior international events this season. In the B Final Pat Maher also got up for third place, no doubt inspired by his trip to Belgium with Dooneen last September.

David O’Shea competing in the 60m is another athlete who will be celebrating this weekend. In the heats on Saturday afternoon, he clocked in at an impressive new PB of 7.02 and qualified for the A final. On Sunday then he lined up for the final and put in a superb sprint of sub seven seconds in 6.95 and break his one day old PB.

Following his recent performance in Wales, Niall Counihan will also be encouraged with further improvement, finishing in fourth place in 13.90m and not far off his PB performance. Also in action was UCC student Nathan Jege in the long jump and he finished in ninth place with a jump of 6.24 below his best of 6.77, but fine for this early stage of the season.

In the 200m Ger O’Shea will be encouraged with a good performance of 23.38, while Zoltan Gyomber finished his heat in 23.54. Also running in the 200m was former Dooneen athlete Ray Lennon, now competing with Tullamore Harriers who ran 24.31.

Well done to all athletes and coaches for the great results for this time of the season.
