Day 1 in the Antrim Forum yields great success for club. Print E-mail

Day 1 of the AAI T&F finals in the manicured grounds of the Antrim Forum yielded good success for Dooneen today. Nathan Jege got the ball rolling early on the in the rain, taking silver in the u17 long jump with a jump of 5:98.This was followed soon after by Bedford bound Ailsih Sheehan who took gold in the u16 javelin with a throw of 32m.

Then as the rain gave way to sun Cathal O'Connor ran a new PB in 4.29 to take the first club gold of the day and remain undefeated this season in the 1500m SC. Jane Dickinson returned to top form on the track soon after to take a further gold, with Nathan Jege taking his second medal of the day with a bronze in the u17 100m. Then the most controversial performance of the day was the performance of the young pocket rocket Mark Varley, who did everything right to take the gold, but after prolonged examinination of the photofinish he was awarded silver, a decision which will be discussed long into the night in Antrim. Margaret Gleeson was a very good fourth in the u19 100m while Steve Howard gave clear notice of unrealised athletic potential potential with another fine run in the u18 100m. With the Croke twins Aishling and Brona,Timmy Crowe, Ciara Barrett, Dylan Sheehan and more of Cathal O'Connor and Steve Howard in action tomorrow the band of travelling Dooneen supporters will be treated to another exciting day's athletics.  Detailed results and images to follow.

Newsflash

Good performances by Dooneen Athletes in Birmingham this weekend.

In mixed weather conditions against the highest quality atheltes in Britain, there were three Dooneen athletes in action at the English open Championships at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham this weekend. Accompanied by coaches Tim Crowe snr. and Simon Jege, all performed well in the club's red singlets. First into action was Timmy Crowe, completing an explosive first full season on the track, in the heats of the 400m hurdles. He finished in 58.21 just 2 secs above his PB and was unlucky to be edged out of the finals, but certainly an athlete to watch out for in the future. Next into action was Cathal O'Connor in the 1500m steeplechase.
