At a short function in the Arena Pavillon at UL this week, Dooneen AC honoured six club athletes, who were selected to represent Ireland on the Irish schools team which competed in the schools international in Bedford Stadium, England in July earlier this year. The six athletes were Tim Crowe 400m h, Jane Dickenson 100m relay, Nathan Jege Long Jump, Ailish Sheehan Shot, Shannen Ryan 1500m and Cathal O'Connor 1500m steeplechase. In making the presentation Chairman Tom O'Connor said it was a great achievement for all six athletes and also for the club and he wished them continued athletic success in the years ahead.
There was further positive developments on the international front with the news that young long distance specialist, Becky Hand, from Bruree, has just been selected to run for Ireland in the forthcoming mountain running international in Scotland next month. Best of luck to Becky. Good luck also to her dad, mum and brother who next weekend will compete in the 29th International Berlin Marathon in Germany.

Meanwhile there was a very good turn out of club athletes and supporters including new faces and returning faces to launch the new season at busy UL track later in the evening. Phil Roche, Liam O'Hora, John Sheehan and other coaches were on hand to put the group through a battery of pre-season fitness tests as the winter training programme now commences in earnest. In particular it was great to see Andrew Breen back after a long illness and he looked in good form also having captained Hospital Herbertstown to success in the Limerick County Minor Football championship recently. Also back after injury was top international triple jumper Niall Counihan, while All Ireland Shot Putt Champion, Fiona Moloney from Kilmallock was also seen going through her paces on the track. Champion sprinters David O'Shea, Margaret Gleeson and Steve Howard were also spotted going through their paces with the Haley Harrison group.
Athletes are reminded that the first race event of the winter season, the Limerick County even age cross country championships, will be held in the grounds of Bilboa AC, near Cappamore on Sunday, 28th September and a good turnout of club runners is expected.
