Ailish Sheahan – an athlete and friend

Dooneen AC wish to extend their condolences to parents John & Catherine and sisters Niamh and Aine on the death of Ailish.

Ailish was an accomplished athlete and competed with Dooneen AC for many years where her father is still a juvenile coach. Her main events were the javelin & shot putt, but Ailish was quite prepared over the years to compete in relays and cross country where teams were required. There were many highlights to her time in Dooneen but in 2009 she became the Irish Schools Champion in Javelin, she won the National U17 shot putt and javelin titles, was a member of the SIAB Track and Field School team that year, and won a gold medal in the javelin at the Celtic Games. Ailish graduated from Notre Dame University after obtaining a scholarship to study there and was undertaking a Masters in the University of London. She was competing in the World University Games last week where she won bronze with the women’s four.

Ailish was also a friend for many athletes, especially those who competed at the same time. Many of them have spoken of the fun times during competition. They recall her sense of humour – Ailish was much taller than many of her peers and loved giving piggy back rides to other athletes – when photos were being taken, she would have to bend down to her knees to make herself look shorter. Despite her talent, she was a regular teenager and would hide behind equipment in the store room from Phil Roche and her father who coached juveniles and would take a short cut to training and jump the high wall at Kilteragh over to Crescent Comprehensive.

A talented athlete has died too young. Rest in peace Ailish from all your friends in Dooneen AC.
