Dooneen A.C. Senior Notes 07/10/2019

Run Galway Bay

This event took place on Saturday, and encompassed a range of distances.

There was a turnout of over 1400 in the 10K. Well done to Aly Hogan O’Curry, who ran 1:03:51.

Over 1100 people took part in the half-marathon. Well done to Karen Raine, who ran a PB of 1:37:33, and to John Higgins, who ran a PB of 1:55:47.

Race Your Pace

This event included 10- and 20-mile options, and took place around the village of Quin, Co. Clare on Saturday.

Running from the club in the 10-mile were Shona O’Flynn (1:20 pacer), Breda Leo, who ran 1:31:28, and Ger Meehan (1:40 pacer).

In the 20-mile, Joe O’Brien was first home from Dooneen in 3rd place in 2:16:35, followed by Elaine Lyons in 3:00:12, and Katherine Reddan in 3:55:55.

Berlin Marathon

Over 40,000 people took part in this year’s Berlin Marathon on Sunday. Well done to Alison Flynn, who ran 3:45:50.

Naas Town 10K

This race took place in Kildare on Sunday. Well done to John Shier, who ran a PB of 48:23.

Limerick Senior & Intermediate Cross-Country Championships

The Limerick Senior & Intermediate Cross-Country Championships took place in Bilboa, Cappamore on Sunday.

The women’s race was the first of the day. Rosemary Ryan lead from the gun, 2nd home was Sinéad McDermott, next home was Karen Raine, followed by Louise Matthews, Verena Tarpey and Marie Keane to ensure Dooneen won Senior team gold.

Sinéad McDermott won the Intermediate title and Louise Matthews claimed bronze.

Declan Moore of Bilboa ran a brilliant race to win the Senior men’s title. The Dooneen men’s team won Senior bronze with Eoghan Beary in 5th, followed by Thomas Klimas, Dermot Kearns, James Connolly, Henry Downes and Kevin Johnson.

Eoghan Beary finished 2nd in the Intermediate race, and led the team of Thomas Klimas, James Connolly, and Kevin Johnson to team silver.

Huge thanks to Bilboa A.C. for organizing the event and making it a great day. Congratulations and well done to all.

Medieval Marathon

This event was held in Kilkenny on Saturday, and encompassed races from 10K to a marathon. Well done to Elaine Lyons and Eileen Reeves, who ran the marathon in 4:24:30 and 4:35:59 respectively.

 

 

Charleville International Half-Marathon

Over 1,300 athletes took part in the Charleville International Half-Marathon on Sunday. Weather conditions were warm and humid, but this didn’t stop some great performances. First man home was David Flynn of Clonliffe Harriers in a course record of 1:03:46 and first woman home was Aoife Cooke of Youghal A.C. in 1:14:39.

Kerryman Dingle Marathon

This event took place on Saturday, with over 2,500 participants over both races. First home for Dooneen in the half-marathon on his first outing at the distance was Cian Aherne in 1:29:16, followed by Mike Griffin in 1:35:47, Karen O’Flynn in 1:40:20, and Kate Twohig in 1:58:29. Well done to everybody who took part.  

 

 

Simplyhealth Great North Run

Around 57,000 people took part in the 39th edition of this half-marathon in Newcastle on Sunday. Well done to Ger Meehan, who, lining up at the event for the 23rd time, recorded a time of 2:04:49 for the journey from Newcastle to South Shields. Read More

Juvenile Training Newsletter

Juvenile Training

Juvenile training commences at 7pm next Monday, 10th September at the Crescent Comprehensive College. We are looking forward to seeing familiar faces and some new athletes who will join us this year. Membership forms are available inside the hall from Brenda and the contribution per night to pay for the cost of the pitches and facilities remains at €3 per child and is payable to Brenda inside in the hall.

Winter/Endurance Training
Monday is the main night of training for all athletes and groups will be divided up according to age categories. The first part of the season will begin with winter/endurance training and upcoming dates for your diary include:

  • County Juvenile Uneven Championships (U9,11,13,15,17) Saturday, 6th October, Bilboa
  • County Juvenile Even Championships – (U10, 12,14,16,18) Sunday 14th October, Bilboa
  • Munster Even Age Championships – 21st October, Beaufort
  • Munster Uneven Championships – 11th November, Waterford
  • Munster Interclub Relays (U12, 14 16) – 18th November, Clarecastle
  • Munster ‘B’ Development Championships – 2nd December, Riverstick

It is the responsibility of parents and athletes to make their own travel arrangements to and from athletics events. We will notify parents in advance if we intend to organise a bus. Training also takes place in the Crescent Comprehensive on Thursday evenings at 6.30pm and at UL on Saturday mornings at 10am in the back fields in UL. These training sessions are for athletes who are competing regularly with the club

Hurdling Workshop October
This October, we will be offering a hurdling workshop held over Monday/ Thursday night for those who are interested in learning the basics for competition or improving on their existing skills. This programme will be delivered by Lilly-Ann O’Hora, hurdling specialist and Regional Development Officer with Athletics Ireland. We are currently taking names of those who wish to take part – we will advise on the exact dates in the next week or two.

Throwing Events
John Sheahan will be in attendance on some Monday nights to offer additional training in shot put and javelin. Please keep an eye out on the notice board outside the hall for dates on when John will be in attendance. He will start at 6.45 and take a group for a half hour until 7.15 and then take a second group from 7.15 to 7.45pm.

Membership for 2019
Membership forms can be collected from Brenda inside the hall every week and we ask that people register well in advance. Membership remains the same at €50 for one child, €90 for two and €120 for 3. Middle Distance Training for older juvenile athletes
Joe Chawke, senior coach will visit  the Crescent Comprehensive during juvenile training sessions this autumn to meet athletes and discuss setting up a group training session for middle distance runners. If you would like to speak to Joe about this, please contact us
